When an environmental impact statement is not required for a resource project

There are several ways that an environmental impact statement (EIS) process under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 may be applied to the assessment of a proposed resource activity. If your project is not required to undertake an EIS and you have not been declared a coordinated project, then your project will not engage in the EIS process.

All resource projects require environmental assessment to decide if an environmental authority may be granted. However, not all resource projects require assessment by EIS.

Before you begin

We strongly recommend that you engage in pre-lodgement meeting(s) with the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation before lodging any applications for a resource project

You should also be registered as a suitable operator.

Read about how to determine if your project may need an EIS.

Next steps

If the project does not require an EIS, find out about applying for an environmental authority assessment.
