Updating the science for the GABORA water plan

Since the Great Artesian Basin and other regional aquifers (GABORA) water plan was made in 2017, monitoring data, including water level and pressure and water quality data, has increased our knowledge on features of the Great Artesian Basin and other regional aquifers and the water requirements of groundwater dependent ecosystems like springs. Our ability to predict and understand the impacts of climate has continued to grow.

This new data and information will be incorporated into the plan, through completion of new technical assessments including:

  • hydrogeological assessments
  • ecological assessments
  • and
  • social and economic assessments.

As part of these assessments, we will evaluate the water related effects of climate change and consider whether the availability of water has changed in the plan area and identify possible future impacts on groundwater availability and demand.

Our areas of focus for water planning science are arranged across 8 themes. These themes are detailed in our Water planning science plan (PDF, 10.1MB) and our storymap.

What do you think?

  • Do you have any suggestions for updating the science for the water plan?
  • Are you experiencing any impacts related to our understanding of aquifers and groundwater, groundwater dependent ecosystems, social, economic or cultural values, or the impact of climate change? How are you managing the effects of these impacts?
