Coal exploration opportunities: CLR2026-2 tender releases
Three coal exploration areas, totalling more than 180km2, have been released via competitive tender in Queensland's Bowen and Surat basins.
These opportunities support future resource development, regional investment and the continued development of Queensland's resources sector.
Tenders must be lodged before the closing time of 11.00am (AEST), Thursday 10 December 2026.

Preferred tenderers must meet environmental, native title and other approval requirements and complete land access requirements before commencing on-ground exploration.

2026 preferred tenderers
Preferred tenderers have been appointed for several exploration areas released through the competitive tender process for:
- coal (CLR2026-1)
- minerals (MLR2026-1)
- petroleum and gas (PLR2026-1).
These tenders covered prospective areas across key basins including the Bowen /Surat basins, with 4 petroleum and gas opportunities located within the Taroom Trough.
The Taroom Trough is an emerging exploration region with potential to support Queensland’s future gas and liquid fuel supply, alongside broader exploration opportunities across the state.
Preferred tenderers must meet environmental, native title and other approval requirements before authorities to prospect can be granted under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 and exploration permits can be granted under the Minerals Resources Act 1989.
Following this, permit holders are required to complete land access and other approval requirements before starting on-ground exploration activities.
