There are no tenders currently open for resources exploration in Queensland.

Petroleum and gas exploration opportunities

Tender PLR2025-1 for 9 areas of land for petroleum and gas exploration in Cooper/Eromanga and Bowen/Surat basins, closed on 7 August 2025.

Awarded tenders

On 29 January 2026, preferred tenderers were announced for three petroleum and gas exploration areas covering prospective ground in the Cooper/Eromanga Basin.

  • PLR2025-1-1: Santos QNT Pty Ltd and Drillsearch Energy Pty Ltd
  • PLR2025-1-4: Santos QNT Pty Ltd and Drillsearch Energy Pty Ltd
  • PLR2025-1-5: Santos QNT Pty Ltd and Drillsearch Energy Pty Ltd

The above tenderer must now meet any environmental, native title and other approval requirements before the Authorities to Prospect are granted under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004.

Following the grant of Authorities to Prospect, the permit-holder will also need to complete land access and potentially other approval requirements before commencing on-ground exploration.

These three areas are part of the package of nine new exploration areas released in 2025, an initiative designed to boost future gas supply. None of the areas overlap the Lake Eyre Basin Strategic Environmental Area – Designated Precinct.

  • PLR2025-1-3
  • PLR2025-1-6
  • PLR2025-1-7
  • PLR2025-1-8.

Area PLR2025-1-9 is still under evaluation.
