Expressions of interest for exploration
A targeted Expression of Interest (EOI) process to nominate areas of land for resources exploration and production is now open and will close at 5:00pm AEST on 30 November, 2026.
Through this process you are invited to nominate specific areas of land to be considered for release for exploration. You can also nominate areas that may be suitable to go straight to production.
EOIs are a key part of planning future land releases for resources exploration and production in Queensland. Companies play an important role by identifying and nominating areas of land they believe have potential for resources development.
The department is seeking expressions of interest for:
- Petroleum and gas exploration land areas with potential to bring resources to market in a short timeframe (close to existing infrastructure and projects including in the Taroom Trough).
- Greenfield petroleum and gas exploration land areas within the Adavale, Galilee, Eromanga, Georgina, South Nicholson and other basins (PDF, 1.8MB) to support increased knowledge and development of frontier basins.
- Coal exploration land areas within the Bowen and Surat Basins (PDF, 908KB) that are either greenfield opportunities or exploration areas that support project expansion, resource development and efficient use of existing infrastructure, including interest in land areas that include non-current MDLs:
The above guidance does not restrict industry from submitting an expression of interest for areas outside of this guidance. All expressions of interest will be assessed and considered for release within the next tendering process, scheduled for 2027.
As general guidance, we request no more than three EOI submissions per entity. However, if you would like to submit more than this number, please contact us to discuss.
How to submit your EOI
New submission
You can submit your expression of interest using the link below. The online EOI form allows you to:
- Nominate an area of land for future exploration or production
- Upload required supporting documentation
The types of supporting documentation you will need to provide as part of your EOI, include:
- a shape file showing the area of interest, which you can produce using GeoResGlobe
- a description of the area
- a statement outlining the rationale for releasing the area
- maps showing nearby infrastructure, resource projects, tenure holding and other relevant features.
Previous submissions
If you submitted an EOI in a previous round that meets the guidance for EOIs sought in this round, please resubmit the area.
All submissions must be received by 5:00pm AEST on 30 November, 2026. Submissions received after this deadline may not be considered.
Note: Your submission is confidential. The names of those submitting EOIs and the details of the EOI submissions will not be released.
