Moving cattle, bison and buffalo

Certain requirements must be met before cattle, bison and buffalo can be moved:

  • within Queensland
  • into Queensland from other states and territories.

If you are receiving relocated cattle, bison or buffalo, you must record the movement within 48 hours on the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS). These requirements help protect our industries from pests and diseases.

When moving cattle, bison and buffalo within Queensland you must:

Ensure that you have met all Queensland travel requirements for cattle, bison or buffalo.

Note: You do not require a Queensland certificate of health as of 1 July 2016 when introducing cattle, bison or buffalo into Queensland. You do have a general biosecurity obligation to prevent or minimise a biosecurity risk.

Note: If cattle are taken directly to slaughter from another state or territory, they may be exempt from branding requirements.
