When getting started with an apprentice or trainee, one of the first things you will need to do is select a supervising registered training organisation, to deliver any off-the-job training.

There are thousands of registered training organisations in Queensland and even more vocational courses to choose from.

Selecting the right one for your apprentice or trainee is vital. To help you make the best decision, here are some useful tips to consider.

Firstly, do your research, and look for an organisation that best suits you.

Like any product, it pays to shop around. Find out who will give you the best deal and what is the right fit for your business needs.

Next, consider the location, as training may be delivered on campus, or in some cases, online. Also ask where assessments and testing will take place, as this could be held in a different place to the training.

It’s also important to ask about any fees and charges, and what resources are included in the course cost.

Check carefully for any additional expenses that may apply, as well as refund policies.

Depending on the course and location, you may be eligible for a subsidy as the Queensland Government funds some registered training organisations to deliver subsidised, entry-level training. These are called Skills Assure suppliers.

You should also consider the duration and delivery of training when choosing your supervising registered training organisation, and how that fits with you and your apprentice or trainee. This includes whether training is offered part-time, full-time or school-based.

Be sure to understand what competencies are included in the training, and whether assessment is held in the workplace or in a simulated environment.

Also ask what additional support services are provided if your apprentice or trainee should need any, particularly for online or distance delivery.
