Cooranga Weir
Cooranga Weir will secure 10,000ML of water to improve the reliability of existing water allocations in the Boyne River and Tarong Water Supply Scheme (WSS).
Sunwater is delivering the Cooranga Weir project in partnership with the Queensland Government, with the construction of the weir being a government election commitment.
We've provided initial funding to Sunwater to start the assessment phase with the final cost to be confirmed through the project assessment report.
Cooranga Weir was looked at in earlier design and feasibility studies. It was also considered an option within the Bundaberg and Burnett regional water assessment – read the summary report (PDF, 10.1MB).
Weir benefits
The weir aims to:
- make existing water supplies in the Boyne River and Tarong WSS more reliable
- help farmers in the Burnett region by giving them access to more secure water for crops
- support local businesses through more reliable water supplies
- create local jobs during construction.
Location
Cooranga Weir will be built on the Boyne River south of Mundabbera in the North Burnett region. It will sit within the North Burnett Regional Council local government area.
Status
The project is now in the assessment phase.
Sunwater is preparing a report on designs, environmental impacts, costs, timelines, and approvals, and will recommend the best way to deliver the project.
Subject to government investment decision, Sunwater will design, build, own and run the weir.
