Temporary access to strategic water infrastructure reserves
Unallocated water can be reserved for future infrastructure projects in a strategic water infrastructure reserve (SWIR).
If the infrastructure project does not require water in the short term, we can decide to make water available as temporary water licences. This supports short-term ventures while keeping water available for future projects.
Water licences from a SWIR release process:
- can be granted for a maximum of 3 years
- cannot be relocated, renewed, reinstated, amalgamated or subdivided.
We can cancel a temporary licence before the expiry date if the water is needed for the infrastructure project.
Eligibility for temporary water licences
To apply for a temporary water licence, you need to meet eligibility requirements. Find out more about who can hold a water licence.
We can add more eligibility requirements in the terms of release for unallocated water releases to help achieve the outcomes of the release.
Express your interest
If you are interested in accessing unallocated water, you can make an expression of interest at any time.
If you register your interest, we will notify you when a release occurs in your area so you can apply.
We will track demand for water to identify opportunities to release SWIR. When deciding to release SWIR, we will consider:
- the outcomes of the water plan
- the likelihood of the infrastructure project needing the water in the short term
- existing water markets
- existing water users.
