Permitted activities in net-free fishing zones

Only the use of nets by licensed commercial fishing boats are prohibited in the net-free zones.

The net-free zones do not affect the use of nets by other fishers outside of the zones.

Examples of activities allowed in the net-free zones:

  • commercial crabbing, line fishing and trawling where it was permitted previously
  • the use of cast nets and bait nets by recreational fishers where they were permitted previously, as long as these nets are lawful and comply with current length and mesh size restrictions.

The change in Regulation excludes:

  • use of any commercial nets by commercial fishers, including for the purpose of collecting bait for personal use
  • the following commercial netting symbols from operating in the net-free zones - N1, N2, N4, N10, N11, K1, K2, K3, K4, K5, K6, K7 and K8. (The Queensland Fisheries Regulation 2008 provides details about these netting symbols.)
