How to give notice of a VMS exemption

A vessel monitoring system (VMS) exemption allows you to carry out certain activities without fishing quota being deducted from your account.

You can apply for an exemption 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by:

  • calling the VMS hotline on (07) 3211 9111
  • using FishNet Secure, Fisheries Queensland's free online service.

To be eligible for an exemption, you must meet the relevant conditions listed below.

Maintenance exemption

A maintenance exemption allows your VMS to be turned off for a short period of time for maintenance. The exemption lasts for 6 hours.

Non-fishing exemption

A non-fishing exemption allows your VMS to be turned off for up to 6 months.

Condition of exemption:

  • Nets must be removed from the vessel (unless the period of the exemption is 4 weeks or less and the vessel doesn't move).

This exemption can also apply when a vessel is located on the slip, dry dock or hard stand, or if the vessel will not be used in Queensland waters.

Non-trawl exemption

A non-trawl exemption allows a vessel to fish in other fisheries (e.g. RQ, SM). This exemption also allows a vessel to be used for recreational purposes.

Conditions of exemption:

  • The VMS must remain turned on.
  • Trawl nets must be removed from the vessel.
  • All trawl product must be removed from the boat.

Steaming exemption

A steaming exemption allows a vessel to drop below 5 knots. This exemption only applies when steaming into port, or from one port to another port.

Condition of exemption:

  • The VMS must remain turned on.

Gear trial exemption

A gear trial exemption allows a vessel to do sea trials. You must provide details of your sea trials (e.g. time and location) to the local Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol office before applying for an exemption.

Conditions of exemption:

  • The VMS must remain turned on.
  • The vessel must not travel further than 1 nautical mile from where the gear trial starts.
  • If nets are in the water, including during testing, the codends of each net need to remain open.
