Net fisheries target species
Queensland's commercial net fishery is a multi-species fisheries, with fishers targeting different species at different times of the year.
East coast inshore fishery
Tier 1 species are key species that drive fishing behaviour in the east coast inshore fishery and are subject to individual transferrable quotas (ITQs) and a total allowable commercial catch (TACC), and are managed regionally. Tier 1 species include:
- barramundi (management regions 1–5)
- king threadfin (management regions 1–5)
- grey mackerel (management regions 1–5)
- school mackerel (management region 5)
- whiting (management region 5).
Tier 2 species are other species of high commercial and recreational importance and are subject to competitive TACCs and managed regionally. Tier 2 species include:
- sea mullet (management region 5)
- black jewfish (management regions 1–5)
- sharks and rays (management regions 1–5)
- tailor (management region 5)
- yellowfin bream (management region 5)
- dusky flathead (management region 5)
- spotted mackerel (management regions 1–5)
- school mackerel (management regions 1–4).
Tier 3 species are all other fin fish species, which will be monitored for changes in fishing pressure.
Gulf of Carpentaria inshore fishery
The Gulf of Carpentaria inshore fishery harvests mainly tropical species, such as:
