Cattle tick surveillance program
Biosecurity Queensland officers conduct regular surveillance for cattle ticks within Queensland’s tick-free zone. This work helps to confirm the continued freedom of the zone from cattle tick and supports early detection if ticks are introduced.
The surveillance program:
- identifies where cattle ticks may occur in the tick-free zone
- pinpoints key risk areas for introduction or spread
- monitors the effectiveness of eradication programs on previously infested properties
- may monitor compliance with livestock movement requirements at congregation points such as saleyards, agricultural shows and other livestock events.
Surveillance activities focus on high-risk areas, such as properties surrounding recent outbreaks and areas where livestock movements heighten biosecurity risks.
The surveillance program does not include property inspections for market access or proof of freedom. These services must be provided by accredited certifiers.
