Role of accredited certifiers

Accredited certifiers are trained and authorised by legislation to certify the cattle tick status of livestock. They may be used when moving livestock between cattle tick zones or verifying the effectiveness of an eradication program in the free zone.

Accredited certifiers:

• can issue biosecurity certificates
• may inspect and/or treat livestock to verify a tick-free status.

Inspection and treatments may be performed on a property or at a clearing facility. On-property inspection and treatments will allow livestock to be certified at their place of origin and moved directly to their destination. The facilities must be suitable for safe and effective inspection and treatment, and must allow the certifier to carry out the required procedure for the movement.

Procedures

The biosecurity manual (PDF, 1MB) outlines the procedures an accredited certifier must follow when certifying the cattle tick status of livestock.

Biosecurity certificates will only be issued if the accredited certifier is satisfied that the 'risk minimisation requirements' outlined in the manual have been met and that the livestock are tick-free.

Becoming an accredited certifier

To become an accredited certifier, you need to complete training and have the necessary expertise and experience to be appointed.

• Accredited certifiers are granted accreditation by the Chief Executive of the Department of Primary Industries and undergo annual audits.
• There are fees associated with becoming an accredited certifier.
• Accreditation can be cancelled at any time if the service provided is deemed not to meet the necessary requirements.
