Delayed adoption of the National Construction Code 2025 in Queensland

The Australian Building Codes Board published the National Construction Code (NCC) 2025 on 1 May 2026, however the Queensland Government has delayed the start of the NCC 2025 until 1 May 2027.

The National Construction Code 2022 will continue to apply to building and plumbing work in Queensland.

This gives industry more time to prepare for the changes in NCC 2025. The delay is being made through Schedule 7 (Queensland variations) of NCC 2025.

Queensland variations in NCC 2025

All current Queensland variations in NCC 2022 Schedule 7 have been reviewed and will continue under NCC 2025.

For all 3 volumes of NCC 2025, Queensland will adopt the code from 1 May 2027.

Queensland will also introduce the following new variations.

• Volume 1
  • Remove the requirement for additional space/floor area in commercial buildings if gas space heating systems are incorporated into certain areas of the building.
  • Remove the requirement for additional reserved capacity for gas-heated water systems for food preparation and sanitary facilities in certain areas of the building.
  • Remove the requirement for additional reserved capacity and space for gas-heated swimming pool and spa water systems in certain areas of the building.
• Volume 3
  • Retain existing requirements for polyethylene drinking water pipes in Queensland.

The Queensland Development Code (QDC) and the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code (QPWC) will continue to apply and may vary parts of the NCC that is in force at the time.
