What is water infrastructure

Water infrastructure is more than dams and pipelines. It includes weirs, water treatment plants, recycling systems, irrigation networks and other storage and distribution solutions. It enables food and water security, new housing developments and the state's critical services and industries to function well.

This infrastructure is vital for clean, reliable water and to support communities, industries and the environment. It can boost economic growth, build resilience to droughts and floods, and support more sustainable use and supply for homes and businesses.

There are multiple contributors to the sustainability and long-term resilience of water resources and infrastructure, including:

  • working with communities and industries to develop water infrastructure plans and facilitate assessments
  • delivery of major infrastructure projects
  • water planning that balances needs of water users and the environment
  • investigating ways to unlock water.

Building in water security

We are developing a new statewide water security plan, which will outline the direction Queensland is taking to boost water security and to support economic growth.

It will bring focus to future investments in water infrastructure and regional development. The new plan will complete the review and replacement of the Queensland Water Strategy in 2026.
