Flood mitigation manuals
Flood mitigation manuals provide information and guidance to enable suitably qualified and experienced professional engineers to make appropriate decisions on releasing water from prescribed dams:
- during flood events
- in response to the declaration of a temporary fully supply level.
Under the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008, a referable dam may be prescribed to require flood operations be undertaken in accordance with an approved flood mitigation manual.
Currently there are only 3 dams with flood mitigation manuals: Wivenhoe Dam, Somerset Dam and North Pine Dam. You can obtain their manuals from Seqwater.
A flood mitigation manual is prepared and submitted for approval by the dam owner to the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy. In deciding whether to approve or refuse to approve the manual, the Minister may get advice from an advisory council. When requested by the advisory council or the Minister, we will also review the manual in conjunction with the requirements of the Act.
