Reducing bycatch in trawl fisheries

Trawling practices have been modified in Queensland to reduce bycatch (the catch not taken to market but returned to the ocean). Bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) are used in commercial fisheries to reduce bycatch and their use is governed by legislation. Every prawn and scallop trawl net being used in Queensland must have a BRD installed.

Using BRDs benefits both the commercial fishing industry and the environment. There is minimal ecological impact and fishing operations are more efficient and profitable. Reduced operating costs, improved product quality and a reduced ecological footprint increase the long-term viability of the industry.

This guide will help you understand the different types of BRDs used in Queensland's commercial fisheries and how they reduce bycatch.
