Selecting a site for land-based marine aquaculture

When selecting a land-based site for marine aquaculture activities, you will need to consider many factors. Quality of saltwater, proximity to protected marine parks or fish habitat areas, and distance from markets are just some of the factors that may influence your final decision.

Aquaculture ventures require approval for certain activities, such as wastewater discharge. Many parts of Queensland's coast are part of, or next to, state marine parks, and if your site is close to protected areas there will be regulatory controls over your aquaculture activities.

As Queensland's aquaculture industry is a complex regulatory environment, we strongly recommend contacting Fisheries Queensland on 13 25 23 before you select and design a site, or buy land.

This guide explains the factors that influence site selection and the key requirements for establishing a land-based marine aquaculture business.
