Asian green mussel prevention and control program

A prevention and control program for Asian green mussel has been authorised under the Biosecurity Act 2014.

Biosecurity matter

The biosecurity matter to which the biosecurity program relates is Asian green mussel (Perna viridis).

Purpose and scope

The purpose of the biosecurity program is to:

  • prevent the establishment or spread of Asian green mussels in Queensland that pose a significant biosecurity risk
  • and
  • manage, reduce or eradicate any Asian green mussels in Queensland that could pose a significant biosecurity risk.

The program applies to the following Queensland local government areas:

  • Aurukun Shire Council
  • Cairns Regional Council
  • Cook Shire Council
  • Gladstone Regional Council
  • Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council
  • Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council
  • Weipa Town Authority.

Commencement and duration

The program starts on 3 August 2026 and will continue until 2 August 2031.

A copy of the biosecurity program for the prevention and control of Asian green mussel is available for inspection at all Department of Primary Industries offices.
