This grant program is competitively assessed. Not all applications will be funded.

The Business Basics grants program provides support to businesses to increase core skills and adopt best practice.

This support includes funded activities in 5 priorities:

  1. Training and coaching
  2. Website build or upgrades
  3. Professional business advice
  4. Strategic marketing services
  5. Business continuity and succession

The program is administered by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT).

Available funding

You may be eligible for a single up-front fixed grant payment of $5,000 (excluding GST).

The grant is for funding activities from the 5 priorities above.

We will not fund activities with either:

  • a total cost of less than $5,000 (excluding GST)
  • payments made before the approval date (you must be approved before you pay for grant-funded activities).

Training and coaching

  • Business development, marketing, human resources or business planning topics
  • Training or coaching

Website build or upgrades

  • Website build or upgrade (including website refresh)
  • Adding e-commerce
  • Developing new website content

Professional business advice

  • Business plans

Strategic marketing services

  • Strategic marketing plans including search engine optimisation advice

Business continuity and succession

  • Business continuity or succession plans
  • Cybersafety training and tools

We will not fund:

  • activities bought using cryptocurrencies, barter, or services in-kind
  • general business operating costs (e.g. bookkeeping or accounting, tax returns)
  • real estate/property, hire, lease, or rental fees
  • goods, services, or fees from related parties (include companies with common shareholdings or directors, employees or immediate family)
  • travel
  • franchise fees
  • purchase of stock
  • GST, registration, and fees
  • maintenance of existing digital technologies
  • computer hardware (e.g. computer servers, PCs, tablets/iPads, mobile phones)
  • activities purchased via direct selling (e.g. by party plan or network marketing)
  • delivery, credit card and transaction fees
  • memberships and joining fees
  • salaries
  • fleet vehicles
  • website hosting
  • advertising campaign delivery (e.g. Google AdWords, Facebook advertising or similar expenses).

Eligibility criteria

This round is only available for eligible small businesses based in regional Queensland.

Check your eligibility to find out if your business can apply for the program.

To be eligible for this grant, your business must:

  • not have been approved for funding under Round 1 of the Business Basics Grants program
  • have fewer than 20 employees (by head count) at the time of applying for the grant
  • have an active Australian Business Number (ABN) and be registered for GST
  • have a Queensland headquarters, and be based in regional Queensland (use the eligibility tool to check your location)
  • have a turnover of $300,000 or less for the last financial year (2020–21)
  • have owners or directors that are not insolvent or an undischarged bankrupt.

Detailed application process

You must complete an online application in SmartyGrants. Applications submitted in person, via email or post will be ineligible.

Your application must include the following documents:

  • a signed and witnessed statutory declaration from the business's owner or director stating the business:
    • has a turnover of $300,000 or less in the last financial year (2020-21)
    • and
    • meets all grant eligibility criteria
  • supplier quotes (no more than 2) detailing description and costs of services, who will undertake the activity, and an outline of key activities.

Following closure of the round, we run a competitive assessment process.

We will advise all applicants of the outcome of their grant application. Successful applicants will receive an approval letter outlining the funding agreement.

Grant recipients enter into a funding agreement with us and receive a single upfront grant payment of $5,000 (excluding GST).

Recipients must complete their grant-funded activity within 4 months of receiving their approval letter.

You must keep all application evidence, supplier quotes, corresponding invoices and bank transactions for audit purposes.

Recipients will be surveyed within 6 months after completion of the grant program.

Round 1 information

Round 1 of the grant is closed and outcomes have been finalised.

Submitting a Review of Decision request

All review of decision requests must be submitted in writing to basics@desbt.qld.gov.au with the email subject clearly titled as Appeal Request plus unique grant application ID.

This request must be lodged within 28 business days1 after you receive DESBTs original written decision in respect of your application

When you make your request to DESBT, include:

  • your unique grant number (e.g. BBASxxxx; BBOOXX or BGFXX)
  • detailed grounds you believe the original decision should be overturned
  • information on how you meet the specific eligibility criteria that DESBT considers have not been met
  • any critical information that in your original application that you believe has been overlooked.

    Note: Applicants will not have an opportunity to submit any additional information or evidence

  • any additional information requested by DESBT that supports your reasoning and assists the financial delegate to make a decision about your request
  • contact details to further discuss your request for a review.

DESBT will carry out its review based on the information you include with your request. All program eligibility criteria must be met for an original decision to be overturned.
