The Small Business Financial Counselling program provides free, confidential, tailored support to Queensland business owners facing financial hardship. Our experienced financial counsellors work with small businesses to help them take control of their finances and plan for the future.

We provide practical, tailored support to help you understand and manage your business finances with confidence. Our services include:

  • Business health checks to review your current financial position and identify practical ways to improve your financial management.
  • Viability support to help you assess the long-term suitability of your business and explore your options.
  • Risk identification and management to help you understand financial risks and develop strategies to reduce and manage them.
  • Debt support including guidance, negotiation assistance, and practical solutions to help manage outstanding debts.
  • Business planning support including succession planning and updates to your business plan to support future growth and continuity.

Our counsellors are available across Queensland, offering face-to-face or virtual consultations to ensure you can access the help you need to navigate financial challenges and build a stronger future for your business.

Eligibility criteria

To access a small business financial counsellor, your business must (at the time of applying):

  • have fewer than 20 employees (full-time equivalent) and less than $10 million in annual turnover
  • be based in Queensland
  • be experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, financial hardship
  • have an active Australian Business Number (ABN) and have actively traded in the last 3 months.

Rural financial counsellors

Specialist rural financial counsellors provide tailored, free and confidential financial counselling support to farmers, fishers, forestry growers, harvesters, and small related businesses experiencing financial difficulty.

They understand the unique challenges of rural industries and can help you assess your financial situation, explore your options, and develop practical strategies to move forward.

Eligibility criteria

To access a rural financial counsellor, your business must (at the time of applying):

  • be a commercial primary production business
  • be experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, financial hardship
  • have an active ABN
  • be based in Queensland.

Access a rural financial counsellor in Southern Queensland and North Queensland. Virtual support and translator and interpreter services may also be available.
