Government support for banana producers
Growth in the banana industry is supported by investment in research and development, and marketing conducted by the banana industry, Queensland Government and Australian Government.
Programs include plant protection, varietal selection, planting and soil health and marketing. Support aims to increase the production, market for and lifespan of the banana industry.
The Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment is the lead research, development and extension agency nationally for bananas under the National Primary Industries Research Development and Extension Framework.
The Australian and Queensland Governments are helping banana growers optimise on-farm practices to improve the water quality in the Great Barrier Reef catchment. Specialist extension staff are investigating improved management practices, and fertiliser application rates to enhance production sustainably.
