Parallel farrowing pens for pigs
Parallel arrangement of pens is the most efficient way to use space in a farrowing area.
Parallel farrowing pens are laid out so the creep areas of each pair adjoin. Your sows will lie in rows in line with the long axis of the pens.
The pig welfare code requires that design must minimise the risk of harm from a pig in an adjacent stall or crate.
Flooring
Parallel farrowing crates can be placed on fully slatted floors to simplify construction. While this also stops floors from becoming wet with drinker spillage, it can increase draughts from underneath.
Board floors or heating mats can be used to keep piglets warm.
Layout
The internal width of a farrowing pen should be at least 180cm to allow enough space for the sow and litter to eat and sleep.
The farrowing crate is usually offset in the pen, with approximately 75cm of clearance on the creep side and 45cm on the other. This allows the common pen partition to be removed for litter mixing and simplifies the area where heating connections and piglet observations are made.
