Avian influenza (bird flu) is a highly contagious viral infection of birds, including poultry.

Current detections in Australia

H5 bird flu has been confirmed in wild birds in some Australian states, including Queensland.

Queensland has activated emergency arrangements and is undertaking surveillance to determine the extent of the infection in wildlife.

Housing free-range poultry

On 26 August 2026, the Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer recommended the extension of the voluntary (non-mandatory) housing of Queensland free-range commercial poultry, where practical and consistent with animal welfare requirements.

This extension is until 25 September 2026. It is a heightened biosecurity measure and will continue to be assessed as the national H5 bird flu response evolves.

Poultry producers can refer to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) guidance on free range claims during bird flu detections.
