Avian influenza (bird flu) is a highly contagious viral infection of birds, including poultry.
Current detections in Australia
H5 bird flu has been confirmed in migratory wild birds found in some Australian states.
Affected governments have activated emergency arrangements and are undertaking surveillance to determine the extent of the infection in wildlife.
The Queensland Government is closely monitoring the situation in southern Australia and has measures in place to respond quickly if it is detected in Queensland.

Avian influenza viruses are restricted and prohibited matter under the Biosecurity Act 2014.
Report signs of avian influenza in birds within Queensland:

- call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 (after hours).
Test suspect cases
Veterinarians can submit samples to the Biosecurity Sciences Laboratory from birds showing clinical signs of avian influenza virus infection.
