ROCKIT Productions was created by teaching artists Shaun Kohlman, Danielle Walsh and George Canham realising the need for a musical theatre training company in Redlands City. ROCKIT has now grown into a company that trains and prepares their graduates for full-time musical theatre institutions across Australia and the world.
My name is Shaun Kohlman, I'm from ROCKIT Productions and I live in Redland City.
ROCKIT Productions is a musical theatre training and production company for youth in Redland City and we extend into the greater Brisbane region.
Over the last 7 years, our company has produced nearly 30 productions with our students ranging from prep through to grade 12 and beyond.
I love working on something new all the time, so every day is different at ROCKIT because we're working with different age groups and different students on different shows, there is always a new project coming or a new costume arrives in the mail and it is the best feeling in the world.
Our students not only develop in performance skills, but they also develop their literacy, their numeracy, working as a team, using their imagination, public speaking. There's so much more than singing, acting and dance.
Both a musical theatre production company and a training institution for young performers, ROCKIT Productions began as a dream when founders Shaun Kohlman and Danielle Walsh were in high school. Living in the Redlands area, they had to travel into Brisbane's CBD twice a week to receive the tuition and training they desired. It was in their formative years they saw the need for a musical theatre training institution in the Redlands area.
Years later, they met again, along with George Canham, for a Christmas carols performance on North Stradbroke Island. Revisiting conversations from high school, they decided to fulfil their dream and open a youth musical theatre production and training company in Redland City.
ROCKIT's first musical was Aladdin in 2011, with a cast of 24 students and it was highly successful within the local community. One of the students from this production went on to study and perform with ROCKIT for another 6 years and in 2017 was the youngest student to have ever been accepted into one of Australia's leading performing arts institutions, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
ROCKIT Productions has since produced 27 musicals, cabarets and concerts and from these placed numerous students in full-time performing arts training institutions in Australia and around the world. ROCKIT Productions were the recipient of the Rotary Small Business Award, nominated for a Redland City Australia Day award, and have been a creative partner with the Queensland Government's Creative Generation: State Schools Onstage since 2016.
