Emergency at a dam

Call 000 for emergencies regarding a dam failing where lives may be in immediate danger.

Where possible and safe to do so, try to warn people who may be impacted by the dam’s failure.

For general dam safety concerns and questions, email damsafety@rdmw.qld.gov.au with the following:

  • description of the issue
  • location or address
  • nearby watercourses
  • approximate height of the wall and volume of the dam
  • distance to the nearest property
  • available photos that will help to illustrate the issue.

Flooding

Flooding often occurs downstream of a dam as part of the dam’s normal design and operation. It doesn’t necessarily mean the dam is failing.

Irrespective of the source of flooding, stay informed, connected and remain alert during flood events and natural disasters. Get Ready Queensland is a year-round program helping Queenslanders prepare for natural disasters.

Local authorities are primarily responsible for the management of flood emergencies. They will provide up-to-date information on things like evacuation centre openings and locations, river heights, road conditions and closures, power and phone outages.

Find flood maps for areas downstream of referable dams.

Flood mitigation manuals

Flood mitigation manuals are available for Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine dams only. They describe how the dams operate during flood events.

You can obtain these manuals from Seqwater.
