Transferring ownership of a petroleum well or water-related bore

What's new

A new practice direction and data submission templates are available below. Read more about new reporting requirements and implementation timelines.

You must notify us before transferring the ownership of a petroleum well or water-related bore to another resource authority holder or a landowner.

Read how to meet your notification and reporting obligations under Queensland resources legislation, and download a flowchart of reporting requirements for well and bore transfers (PDF, 130KB).

Permits this applies to

  • Authority to prospect
  • Petroleum lease
  • Water monitoring authority

Permitted transfers

You are allowed to transfer the following types of wells or bores.

Petroleum wells can only be transferred to the holder of a geothermal resource authority, prospecting permit, mining claim, exploration permit, mineral development licence or mining lease if the well is in the area of the transferee's resource authority. To transfer a petroleum well to a landowner or another petroleum tenure holder, you must first convert the well to a water-related bore, then transfer the bore.

Water supply bores can be transferred to a landowner if the bore is on the landowner's land.

Water monitoring or observation bores can be transferred to:

  • the State of Queensland
  • a landowner if the bore is on the landowner's land
  • a holder of an authority to prospect, a petroleum lease or water monitoring authority if the bore is in the area of the transferee's resource authority.

Before starting activities

Check requirements for land access and other notices before starting petroleum and gas activities.
