Carbon capture and storage

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an emission reduction process that can capture carbon dioxide (CO2) produced from the use of fossil fuels in electricity generation and industrial processes. The process involves capturing CO2 and then storing it in underground geological formations or structures.

Queensland was one of the first jurisdictions in Australia, and in the world, to establish a comprehensive legislative framework for CO2 storage. The primary role for government is to set the regulatory and policy frameworks that will allow the deployment of CCS and access to secure storage sites in Queensland. The Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2009 has established the framework for storage activities.

The Queensland Government will continue to deliver best practice regulatory frameworks for the industry.

Exploration reports

Holders of resource authorities are required to submit a range of statutory reports on their activities through the GSQ Lodgement Portal. After a period of confidentiality, these reports and data are made publicly available through the GSQ Open Data Portal.
