Exploration Data Centre
Geoscience products and services
The Exploration Data Centre (EDC), houses geoscience information collected from the mid-1800s to today. The collections include drill core and cuttings from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) and company exploration programs, and samples and slides from Geological Survey Queensland mapping fieldwork.
A range of geoscience services (PDF, 9KB) are available at various prices to support exploration, mining and research. Extensive hardcopy company exploration reports are available as scanned documents from QDEX (the Queensland Digital Exploration Reports system).
Drill core and cuttings
EDC's core library holds core and cuttings representing samples from nearly 8000 drill holes. The core collection, from Queensland Government and company drilling programs from the mid-1950s to today, provides a representative sample of Queensland's important mineral deposits.
To inspect core, please make written requests to:
Exploration Data Centre Manager
Geological Survey of Queensland
Level 10, 119 Charlotte St
Brisbane Queensland 4001
We need at least 24 hours notice to lay out core, and footwear is required at all times. EDC staff can undertake sampling and slabbing for clients. Acid, sample bags, tags and geology picks/hammers are supplied.
The EDC core library continually seeks new material to add to our collection, particularly core from mineral exploration.
Seismic data
EDC is the official repository for all seismic data submitted under legislation. We store digital field and processed seismic survey data, support data and scanned and original sepia sections.
HyLoggerTM data
EDC houses HyLoggerTM, a non-destructive, spectroscopic scanning technology developed by CSIRO, which is a cost-effective way of capturing detailed mineralogical data along with a high-resolution digital image of the drill core in their original trays, thus digitising the whole core-logging process.
Regional core storage
DEEDI has regional drill core facilities in Mount Isa, Mount Morgan and Charters Towers. Core from a range of prospects and mine sites in Northern and Central Queensland have been added to these facilities.
