CSG-LNG skills and workforce development

The Queensland Government is committed to developing the coal seam gas to liquefied natural (CSG-LNG) sector and has been working with industry proponents, contractors, government, local businesses, training providers and regions to build the industry capacity, develop skills and create jobs. This includes:

  • helping businesses participate in the sector´s development
  • building infrastructure and services to support growth opportunities
  • attracting new industries to Queensland
  • building capacity to become internationally competitive
  • developing skills and workforce plans to service the LNG industry
  • developing new job creation programs and helping unemployed Queenslanders get back into work.

You can also access a wide range of workforce development advice and assistance through our network of Industry Skills Bodies. This service helps industries and businesses plan for future growth opportunities.

Funding has also been provided for a CSG-LNG Industry Skills Formation Strategy. This will allow industry groups and the community to work together with government and other relevant stakeholders to analyse and address current and future workforce issues.

Meeting CSG-LNG workforce demands

It is estimated that the CSG-LNG industry will create at least 18,000 jobs with many more flowing from the wider resources boom occurring in Queensland.

To help develop the CSG-LNG industry, the Queensland Government has:

  • delivered a $10 million program to train thousands of workers
  • expanded the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy
  • delivered a CSG-based program to more than 4350 students in the Surat Basin
  • provided nearly $24 million to manage growth in the Surat Basin, with $4.5 million of that funding dedicated to a Trade Training Hub that will give students high-quality CSG production skills.

CSG-LNG workforce development planning

Workforce development plans have been developed specifically for industry and the key CSG-LNG regions of the Surat Basin and Gladstone.

Workforce planning will help to inform industries, businesses, local communities and individuals about what the growth of the industry will mean for labour requirements and employment opportunities.

Plans underway include:

Training workers in the CSG-LNG industry

The Department of Education and Training and Skills Queensland are working with industry and other stakeholders on a number of strategies to train the thousands of workers needed for the new CSG-LNG sector.

  • LNG industry training program is a partnership between industry and the Queensland Government to train workers for the CSG-LNG industry. Jobseekers, existing workers and registered training organisations can register their interest in training online.
  • The CSG-LNG Skills Taskforce, made up of representatives from industry and Energy Skills Queensland, is working with the Queensland Government and other stakeholders to prepare for the skills needs of the CSG-LNG industry over the next 10 years.
