Ordering leucaena inoculum for cattle
Cattle that are introduced to graze leucaena-based pastures in Queensland should be inoculated against a harmful toxin in the leucaena fodder tree (Leucaena leucocephala). The leaves, pods and seeds of leucaena all contain the toxic amino acid mimosine.
The leucaena inoculum contains a rumen bacteria (Synergistes jonesii) designed to break down mimosine to harmless by-products. Without the inoculum, cattle liveweight gain can be significantly limited. In some instances, the animal can die.
New arrangements for ordering leucaena inoculum
New arrangements are in place for cattle producers wanting to order leucaena inoculum. The Tick Fever Centre at Wacol has taken over from the current supplier Brian Pastures Research Station at Gayndah.
You can place orders for the leucaena inoculum by phone (07) 3898 9655 or fax (07) 3898 9685. If you are faxing your order through, please use the leucaena inoculum order form (PDF, 72KB).
Office hours at the Tick Fever Centre are from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
Under the new ordering arrangements, the price of the inoculum will remain the same. A 500ml bottle will still cost $118.41 (ex GST) plus freight.
