Seller's checklist

Ask yourself:

  1. How am I going to advertise the sale of my business? Consider utilising the following methods: 
    • Business brokers online
    • business for sale magazines
    • advertising in newspapers

  2. What costs are involved in selling my business? Have you considered advertising and marketing costs, legal and financial institution fees or purchasing a valuation report?

  3. How will I value the business?

  4. Can my business licences be transferred or should they be ceased? Contact SmartLicence for licensing enquiries on the Business Hotline 1300 363 711 or (interstate/overseas callers +61 7 3001 6359)

  5. If I have a registered Trademark - do I wish to retain it?

  6. If I employ staff, have I notified WorkCover Queensland to cease the policy?

  7. Have I notified my business bank, insurance company, the industry association I operate under and any other organisation that I am selling my business?

  8. Have I notified the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) or in the case of a company, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) about the sale of my business?

  9. If I operate as a franchise, have I notified the franchisor about the sale of my franchise?

  10. Have I notified my local council?

  11. Have I notified Australia Post for redirection of my mail?

  12. Have I liaised with the real estate agent about leasing arrangements?

  13. Have I notified my existing or valued clients?
